Department structure

Physical education and sports are not only for athletes—they also play vital roles in education and health.
At our University, we also focus on areas such as expressive activities and the sports business. Starting in the third year, students can choose from five specialized studies based on their interests to further deepen their learning.

Future vision: Elementary, junior high, and high school teachers; professional athletes; corporate team athletes; trainers; government employees; and employees in private companies.

    Budo, martial arts, is a traditional culture that Japan proudly presents to the world. In this program, students aim to deeply understand the spirit of martial arts and contribute to international exchange.
    The Department includes athletes and coaches who have represented Japan in the Olympics and national championships, offering students the opportunity to directly learn the essence of competition and sharp, refined techniques.

    “Tenri Sports” is cultivated by Tenri’s unique spiritual culture. Students gain an understanding of the history and philosophy of various sports practiced in Tenri and develop the knowledge and attitude essential for becoming true “sports people.”

Education Policies

  • Admission Policy

    In order to fulfill the educational goals of the Department of Physical Education, we seek for students with the following qualities:
    1. (Knowledge, Understanding) Those who are interested in physical education, sports, or budo, martial arts, and wish to apply their abilities as future instructors.
    2. (Thought, Judgment) Those who aim to develop the ability to think critically and make sound judgments in order to teach and apply what they have learned.
    3. (Skills, Action) Those who wish to enhance their athletic skills, techniques, and physical abilities as athletes.
    4. (Interest, Motivation) Those who are eager to acquire the ability to find solutions to issues by integrating theory with practice.
    5. (Attitude) Those who aspire to lead a lifelong sports-oriented lifestyle.

    Entrance examination methods will take various forms, such as comprehensive selection, special selection, school recommended selection, general selection, and transfer selection.

  • Curriculum Policy

    We systematically distribute subjects that provide students with the opportunity to acquire and explore advanced knowledge and skills related to physical education, sports, and budo, martial arts.
    In the first year, students take required subjects, including introductory subjects and a variety of sports disciplines. In the second year, the curriculum includes required subjects aligned with the five specialized Studies available from the third year, along with additional practical sports classes. From the third year, students are divided into five Studies and take specialized subjects according to their chosen field, along with continued practical training.
    Furthermore, the curriculum includes seminar-based classes in the third and fourth years to prepare students for their graduation research, serving as the culmination of their academic development.

  • Diploma Policy

    A bachelor’s degree (Physical Education Studies) will be awarded to students who have acquired the following knowledge and abilities:
    1. (Knowledge, Understanding) Those who have acquired specialized knowledge in physical education, sports, or budo, martial arts, and has acquired the qualities necessary to apply these abilities as an instructor.
    2. (Thought, Judgment) Those who have acquired the ability to make appropriate judgments and actions to safely and effectively teach and practice physical education, sports, and budo, martial arts.
    3. (Skills, Action) Those who have acquired the skills, techniques, and behavioral competencies necessary to practice and instruct sports and budo, martial arts.
    4. (Interest, Motivation) Those who have acquired the ability, as a specialist in physical education, sports, and budo, martial arts, to identify issues clearly and develop solutions by integrating theory with practice.
    5. (Attitude) Those who have developed the attitude to promote the value and culture of physical education, sports, and budo, martial arts, and to maintain a lifelong commitment to a sports-oriented lifestyle.
