All international students must join the National Health Insurance, Kokumin Kenko Hoken, aka "Kokuho." If you have any questions about medical expenses, please ask at the Office of International Exchange Center. The Office of International Exchange Center is on the 1st floor of Somanouchi Campus Hall No. 3.

National Health Insurance program (“Kokuho”)

In Japan, if you do not have health insurance, you may incur high medical costs for treatment of illness or injury, which may make it financially difficult for you to continue your life as an international student. Therefore, all international students living in Japan for more than one year are required to subscribe to the National Health Insurance, Kokumin Kenko Hoken, aka “Kokuho.”

Procedures for registration for the National Health Insurance program are handled at the National
Health Insurance Section of the municipal office where you registered as an alien. It is recommended that you complete the procedures together with your alien registration. If you change your address or other details, please notify the National Health Insurance Section within 14 days of the change, or before leaving Japan if you are leaving for home.

Monthly insurance premiums vary slightly from office to office. If you have more income from part-time work, the amount you pay will also increase. If you have no income, you can receive a reduction by applying for it. Please consult with the National Health Insurance Section.

When you receive medical treatment at a hospital or receive a prescription at a pharmacy, you will
only need to pay 30% of the total medical expenses by presenting your insurance card. The remaining 70% will be covered by the National Health Insurance.

By registering in this compensation program, international students can lighten the guarantor’s mental burden and make it easier for the guarantor to take on the responsibility. The insurance fee is 4,000 yen for Course A (one year) and 8,000 yen for Course B (two years). Registration procedures and insurance claims are handled at the Office of International Exchange Center.
