Tenrikyo Theology Major

The principal aim of this major is to bring up talented individuals who can contribute to the future of Tenrikyo and to educate successors to church head ministers.

Students study Tenrikyo theology from four different perspectives: the study of scriptures, historical studies, the study of the doctrine, and the study of practical issues. Introduction to Religious Studies and Introduction to Tenrikyo Theology are required of all students in the department. The other courses, such as Lecture on The Life of Oyasama, the Foundress of Tenrikyo, Study of Tenrikyo Scriptures, Study of Tenrikyo Doctrine, and History of Tenrikyo, are prescribed as required subjects of Tenrikyo Theology Major. In order to focus on the practical learning, Church Practice Course is adopted in the curriculum. In this course organized in cooperation with Tenrikyo churches in Japan and other countries, students have a chance to confirm the theoretical study of Tenrikyo faith and practice the teachings within the actual church life.

Moreover, the departments provide its students with an understanding of the organic relation between ordinary religious studies and Tenrikyo theology. That is the reason why many courses of religious studies, such as History of Religion, Psychological Study of Religion, Sociological Study of Region, and Philosophy of Religion, are included in the curriculum.

Comparative Religion Major

Students study religion from two major perspectives: history of religion and comparative studies of religion. The concept of religion is widely considered in various courses, such as Readings in Religious Studies, Religious Studies Seminar, Philosophy of Religion, Psychological Study of Religion, and Sociological Study of Religion. The establishments of various religious traditions are systematically studied in the courses of history of religion. The other courses, such as Method of Religious Survey and Study of Popular Religion, are prescribed for the study of religion in everyday life. Furthermore, students study various aspects of religion, such as ideas of god, religious rituals, and performing arts, in order to deeply consider the issue of religion which is a fundamental factor of human studies.

Department of Human Relations
Clinical Psychology Major



Sand Play Technique practicum

Students learn the skills and knowledge of clinical psychology to solve imminent problems based on the understanding of humans and society.

For that purpose, the curriculum is organized with such subjects as Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Trainings in Clinical Psychology. Students can go to professional training of clinical psychology with stepping on fundamental understanding for domains of psychology.

Among many courses of practical training are the practical techniques of counseling, group work, psychological tests, and so on.

Lifelong Education Major



Group work

This course is aiming at the development of talented persons who can contribute to the substance and progress of lifelong learning and social education. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills that can deal with people's diverse needs of learning, and learn about human relations that are creative and meaningful.

For that purpose, students will study the theory and practice of lifelong education in such fields as pedagogy, lifelong learning, adult education, and practical training in various institutions of social education.

As a result, students will acquire qualifications for the job of a facilitator of social education and a qualification of candidacy for examination as a social worker. They can get a position on the Board of Education or in various providers for lifelong education after graduation.


Social Welfare Major



This course aims at meeting the needs of society as a background of active social welfare activity of Tenrikyo.

Students study the policy for securing right to maintaining decent living, the problems of interaction in personal situation configuration, and the adequate social service to individuals and groups.

Furthermore, as concrete support techniques, they learn social casework, social group work, community work, and social work research, etc.

For that purpose, a wide variety of courses are offered for understanding the essence of social welfare, methodology and skills, field work, and practical training and exercise.

Students learn the theory and practice and acquire a qualification of candidacy for examination of "certified social worker."
